What a wedding DJ actually does
The DJ is in charge of the music and the energy on the dance floor. That means reading the room, mixing tracks so there are no dead moments between songs, matching the tempo to the crowd, and making sure your first dance, cake cut and bouquet toss land on the exact cue you want.
A good DJ also handles the technical side you never think about: PA setup, wireless mics for speeches, lighting cues, and a backup rig in case anything fails. The music is the obvious part — the reliability is what you're really paying for.
What a wedding MC actually does
The MC (Master of Ceremonies) runs the room. They introduce the bridal party, cue speeches, keep the timeline on track with the venue and catering staff, and make announcements — from "grab a drink, we're moving outside for photos" to "please welcome the couple for their first dance."
A strong MC is calm under pressure, funny without hijacking the moment, and confident holding a microphone in front of 150 people. They're the reason the night flows instead of stalling every 20 minutes.
The key difference
The DJ owns sound and music. The MC owns the schedule and the room. One is behind the decks; the other is on the microphone. They work as a team — the MC cues the moment, the DJ delivers the music.
Do you need both?
For a full sit-down wedding with speeches, formalities and a proper reception timeline — yes, you want both roles covered. For a smaller cocktail-style reception where a friend is happy to make announcements, a DJ alone can work.
